Dracula's Trail of Blood

APP ILLUSTRATIONS

Illustrations for a Gamebook developed by Cubus Games based on a free sequel to Dracula (Bram Stoker). The story unfolds in the twenty-first century, reflecting the plan of Dracula over the centuries, as well as his new arrival to the world. Certain characters from the original novel—as Mina or Dolingen von Graz—are rescued in this new story.

Mina

Wilhelmina Harker illustration. In this game, Mina is already a full vampire embraced by Dracula’s minion, Countess Dolingen. She is based on Prypiat, surrounded by forests of incandescent trees.

Vlad

Vlad illustration. Dracula has long since died. However, in the game his presence is still in force through certain characters and events that lead the reader to a mortal lad named Vlad.

Nasal'nik

Nasal’nik illustration. Nasal’nik was an ancient servant of Dracula, raised among his blood-bonded pack of wolves. A beast-like ghoul who walks the night worshiped as a demigod among some European people. Mina is his current master and source of vampiric blood.

Dolingen

Countess Dolingen illustration. Dolingen was one of the lovers and children of Dracula in the 15th century. Now she is one of his most ancient servants as well as Mina’s master. She is disconnected of the modern world, dressing and acting as if she was still in the past.

Art Direction

The starting point was to avoid a classic depiction of Dracula —generally dark, mottled, lugubrious— using simple, somewhat geometric, color-filled illustrations. Instead of using a common palette to unify the various illustrations, each of them uses a specific and differentiated range that makes each character present his own chromatic identity. Some details, like the presence of thorns and spines contribute to a certain aggressiveness.

Choomia

Choomia illustration. Choomia was Dracula’s contact with his Gypsie servants while he remained in the Carpathians. In the twentieth century she remains a loyal servant to her mistress—Countess Dolingen—and Dracula himself.

Map

Navigation map. The user has the possibility of checking the visited parts of the story. In order to complete the full story, the reader needs to confront all of the different servants and children of Dracula throughout Europe.
